Victoria Duathlon Race Report by Keith Hodgson

Today I entered my first Duathlon at Victoria’s race held in Kitchener. There were around eight hundred competitors there. There were a few riders from the Orillia Cycling Club but there didn’t appear to be any others from the Baydogs. There were a few competitors from the ITU under 23 Team Canada triathlon series. Lots of different age groups including some in their eighties. Luckily I got to rack my bike beside Paul “Speedy” Gonzales. He’s a very experienced triathalete and he answered all my beginner questions and gave me lots of tips about racing and setup as well. They had wave starts and every three minutes they let another age group start the race. This was better than having one mass start with everyone jockeying for position.

The weather was partly cloudy with the sun peaking through. About three quarters of the way through the bike course it rained for maybe ten minutes. The 4km run course was fairly flat with a few small hill sections. The 30km bike course was very challenging. About 1 km into the bike section there was a steep hill that I swear I saw mountain goats and white snow at the top (ok so it was cows and haybails). After that there were lots of rolling hills. Before the turn around point was a long steady climb of about 1 ½ km, good test for the legs. The nice part was putting the bike in the tall gears and motoring down the hills. Strong cross/head winds for most of the bike course. Anyone with aero wheels would be having a difficult time keeping the bike steady.

The finally 4km run section was the hardest. It wasn’t that I didn’t have the energy it was because my legs were so tired from the bike course. My mind wanted me to go faster but my legs weren’t cooperating.

Thanks go to Subaru for being a major supporter of this event and for all the volunteers that helped make this possible. Thanks also to Nathan Brooks for teaching me about transitions. It helped a lot to be organized and to think about getting into and out of the transition area quickly.

Next up will be my first triathlon.

70.3 Florida Race Report by Genevieve Blais

Last week-end, may 15, I had completed 70.3 Florida.

It was great and very hot. Not used to 30-35 degrees now.
I was a good cutomer of ice at aid station to try to stay cool.
Ya, flat course but hot.
I had travelled with Wes Jet with my new box (same as Jamie) and they are great for fees.
An album is avail on FB.
Thanks to all support from the Baydogs, specially to Joe and Greg my boyfriend supporter, sherpa and cheer leader for the event.
We had a great time.

I strongly encourage anyone to race and discover what is around...
Nice way to start the season, I already got my race suit marks from sun burn!
Way to go!

Amazing weekend by Baydogs, and Baydog alumni!

This past weekend was a great weekend for any athlete that competed, but specifically for a wide assortment of Baydogs. The podiums just keep on coming, and we haven't even started triathlon season!

70.3 Florida
Genevieve Blais travelled to the warmer weather to kickstart her tri season! Great finish Genevieve!
S: 42:44 (28/100) B: 2:59:54 (36/100) R: 2:45:46 = 6:37:49 (63/100)

Mississauga 10km
Mark Deslaurier raced in the downpour on Saturday and finished an amazing 1st in his Age Group with a time of 42:24!! Great job Mark! The speed work paid off!

Mississauga Half Marathon
Mary Mitchell did it again. If she is registered in half, you can bet a podium is waiting for her at the end! Mary finished with a time of 1:32:15 to finish 3rd in her Age Group and 14th in her gender category!
Teri Caswell braved the soggy weather to complete the half marathon with a time of 2:06:50!

Nathan Brooks let his treadmill dust running outside for the first time this winter and set a great pace with a PB time of 1:35:58!

Mississauga Full Marathon
Christian Caswell, Ironman extraordinaire, ran a strong marathon with a time of 3:27:36!

Baydog Alumni Jon Dow ran so fast he didn't even know it was raining finishing 3rd OVERALL with a ridiculous time of 2:47:14, which also got him 1st in his Age Group!

Good job to all Baydogs that I have missed, or braved the bad conditions for their training! The Baydogs are on the prowl ready to take on all competition this try season!

Congratulations to Ryan Blake and Kirsten Lowery for being Top Male and Top Female on Wednesday night. Since it was the first TT of the season, they are the current 2011 course record holders (All time record holder is still Tim Deacon with a blistering 29:36). Great job by everyone on what was a beautiful night for TTing! And thanks to Trek for setting up a tent, showing off their Speed Concept, and assisting Baydogs with bike queries!
