In Transition
Okay, maybe not so much. BUT, most triathletes are in their off-season at the moment, getting ready for that New Year's Resolution back-into-training plan, or perhaps you took your off season earlier, and now you're gearing up for some early winter/mid winter running races.
There are a multitude of events coming up:
Orillia SnowFlake Series
Barrie Running Room Santa Shuffle
Barrie Running Room Resolution Run
Chilly 1/2 Marathon
Peterborough 1/2 Marathon
Also, the club has some big things in the works for winter training. We can't go into details just yet, but if everything works out, we're hoping to take your training to a whole new level!
So enjoy your "transition" from racing to training season. Enjoy some holiday cheer guilt-free knowing that soon you'll be pounding that snow drift with your yak-trax with a cold winter head wind, wishing it were summer!

Barrie Triathlon Club Conquers Barrie!
On August 14th, Barrie's inaugural 1/2 marathon was run down on the waterfront with many Baydogs either using it as a training day, or racing it to set a PB/podium. Kevin O'Neill was 2nd in his AG, Craig Owens was 3rd in his AG, Ryan Blake WON the Relay Division, and congratulations to those that swam 1.9km, rode 90km on the Saturday, and then ran 21.1 on the Sunday!
Good job Baydogs!

Cobourg race report by Ken Scott
I had some trouble finding the race site on Friday, as my Garmin didn’t seem to know about Victoria Park, It wanted to send me to a trailer park some distance away. When I finally found the park, my first impression was that race day parking was going to be a challenge, as the surrounding streets all were equipped with parking meters, operating 7 days a week and limited to 2 hours. This was solved when one of the volunteers doing set-up advised that there was free street parking on near-by residential streets “if you get there early”. Which I did.
Saturday morning was bedevilled with a low fog, which made the water invisible from shore. It was obvious that the swim could not proceed in the conditions. The organizers decided to wait out the fog, and eventually succeeded after a number of postponements and reconfiguring the swim course to bring it close to shore. The race finally started around 9, almost an hour late. By 10, the fog was rolling back to shore, so there was only just enough time for the swim.
My race effectively ended before it started. During the long wait, I took a swig from one of my water bottles and got a nasty surprise. I had filled the bottle with my usual mix of Carbo Pro and a NUUNs tablet, a mixture I have used successfully for 5 years. That swig tasted like battery acid, my throat instantly becoming raw. Worse, my stomach immediately rebelled, but wouldn’t chuck the offending mixture. I once made the error of running shortly after eating a slice of pizza. This feeling was similar, but worse. I started, but by half way though the first of the 2 5k loops that started the Du, I knew that it would be useless to continue. Pity, as the run course gently rolls through residential neighborhoods.
I previously noted some organizational deficiencies. I did not mention that aid stations set up at 1k and 4k on the run loop were not manned for the 10k run at the start of the Du, nor that when I struggled off the course after 46 minutes (for 5k!), well after the Du leaders were on their bikes and swimmers were streaming out of the water, that there was nobody, repeat nobody, at the first aid tent. The organizers were fixated on counting bikes left in transition as a means of determining if they needed to drag the water for bodies. There was nobody checking on who took a bike out of transition.
I would think twice before attempting this event again.

Greg Cormack competing in an X-Terra event in Vermont
Greg Cormack competed a great Xterra race on July 31st in Essex junction , VT. If you are unfamiliar with Xterra racing, it is a standard swim, mountain bike looped course, and a trail run (.75mswim, 10m bike, 3.1m run). Greg's times were swim: 0:26:38, bike: 1:30:58, run: 0:31:54 for a total of 2:29:30 to put him in 4th in his age group! Great job Greg!!

North Bay Triathlon Race Report by Kirsten Lowery
Lloyd and I raced at North Bay on Sunday. A great small town race with some tough competition. Len Gushe was the overall winner of the race with a blistering swim time of 11:44 for 1 km! Crazy! Lloyd placed an amazing 8th overall, and 2nd in his age group while I finished 3rd in my age group. It was an extremely hilly bike course which would give the Muskoka 70.3 a run for it's money any day, but it was a tonne of fun with a lot of enthusiastic cheering spectators on course!

Congratulations Team Racer Sportif
TT rules & safety regulations
Check in with the timekeeper to receive your departure number position
Line up at starting line on the shoulder in departure number order.
Generally ride to the right as you would when normally using the road. You are not required to be on the paved shoulder.
Respect the rights of other road users. Allow plenty of room when passing pedestrians or other cyclists.
When passing another TT participant, abide by traffic laws pertaining to passing another road user. Do not pass to the right. Maintain a speed sufficient to get clear of the other participant.
When being passed by another TT participant, you must allow a five bike length gap to be created before you make an attempt to catch and pass that participant unless you were already accelerating (as happens when approaching the finish line).
Do not ride with your head down.
The decision to turn is yours alone. You must check in both directions well in advance of the turnaround point to determine whether it is safe to turn. If in doubt, err on the side of waiting.
Helmet use is mandatory.
Procedural Rules
No drafting is allowed except in team time trials. The five bike length rule applies.
Call out your number loud and clear as you approach and cross the finish line. If another rider is crossing the finishing line just ahead of you, allow him or her to call his or her number first so the correct finishing sequence can be recorded.
Ride through the finish line and continue riding in the same direction so as not to interfere with riders finishing behind.
Make your U-turn at least 100 metres beyond the finish line.

Nate Matthews Ride Report - Tour de Tips
We left Newmarket with rain and strong winds. The weather cleared by lunch and had a terriffic ride through Peel Regions back roads and finished up in Burlington to a bbq.
The second day was terriffic. We avg close to 40 kph in a group of 8 screaming down the waterfront walk and bik path (the size of a 3 lane hwy) heading south thru Burlington. That lasted for 40 km where we stopped for a rest and the lead group kept going.
We ended up arriving first at the winery outside of St. Catherines after the lead group took a wrong turn. We were met by a bag piper and a nice lunch.
It was a great ride and our legs and butts were no worse for wear after day 2.
Now there is a Toronto to Ottawa ride at the end of September if anyone is interested. 3 days, 140 km each day.

Victoria Duathlon Race Report by Keith Hodgson
The weather was partly cloudy with the sun peaking through. About three quarters of the way through the bike course it rained for maybe ten minutes. The 4km run course was fairly flat with a few small hill sections. The 30km bike course was very challenging. About 1 km into the bike section there was a steep hill that I swear I saw mountain goats and white snow at the top (ok so it was cows and haybails). After that there were lots of rolling hills. Before the turn around point was a long steady climb of about 1 ½ km, good test for the legs. The nice part was putting the bike in the tall gears and motoring down the hills. Strong cross/head winds for most of the bike course. Anyone with aero wheels would be having a difficult time keeping the bike steady.
The finally 4km run section was the hardest. It wasn’t that I didn’t have the energy it was because my legs were so tired from the bike course. My mind wanted me to go faster but my legs weren’t cooperating.
Thanks go to Subaru for being a major supporter of this event and for all the volunteers that helped make this possible. Thanks also to Nathan Brooks for teaching me about transitions. It helped a lot to be organized and to think about getting into and out of the transition area quickly.
Next up will be my first triathlon.
70.3 Florida Race Report by Genevieve Blais
It was great and very hot. Not used to 30-35 degrees now.
I was a good cutomer of ice at aid station to try to stay cool.
Ya, flat course but hot.
I had travelled with Wes Jet with my new box (same as Jamie) and they are great for fees.
An album is avail on FB.
Thanks to all support from the Baydogs, specially to Joe and Greg my boyfriend supporter, sherpa and cheer leader for the event.
We had a great time.
I strongly encourage anyone to race and discover what is around...
Nice way to start the season, I already got my race suit marks from sun burn!
Way to go!

http://results.active.com/pages/searchform.jsp?rsID=107288
Kevin made the trip to St. Louis to run the Go! St. Louis Marathon for fun and pace his friend Rick MacLean to Boston. Unfortunately the unseasonably warm temperatures forced Race Directors to cut short the marathon and they were unable to achieve their goal.
Also, in her second ever race, Kevin's wife Chris O'Neill finished second in her Age Group!

So far, so successful for the Baydogs in 2011!
Just letting you know I ran the Chilly ½ Marathon today. This was my first
every ½ Marathon. My chip time was 2:15. The race name lived up to its
reputation and it was a chilly run, around -5C with a windchill making it
about -12C. There were two other Baydogs runners there with me (Torsten
Helmich 1:52 and Dave Reckzin 1:34). It was well run and all the runners
seemed to enjoy this long race. Thank’s goes out to the City of Burlington
for hosting this event.
Keith Hodgson
New Baydog member
Congratulations to everyone so far for setting the bar high for the 2011 season! Great job to all Baydogs that have already raced this year, and good luck to everyone for a successful 2011 season.

Barrie TC 100 Day Run Challenge
The goal of the Challenge is to help you get started with a running/ training program and to have some fun doing it.
The minimum requirement is doing 30 minutes for the run to count. It can be outdoors or on a treadmill, but it must be running (no water running, no elliptical trainer). Any runs as part of other run programs qualify towards your daily requirement for this Challenge.
Walking does not count.
A $10 entry fee per person will be requested to offset a huge PARTY on Thursday June 2 at The Lockeroom (BTC Social Night) to celebrate our accomplishments and present some well deserved AWARDS and maybe a little SWAG!
Here are some of the simple ground rules:
• You can take days off
• You can double up runs in a day
• You can take rest days
• You get no credit for going hard
• You get no credit for going long
• You can go as slow as you want
For a run to count as a double, it must be separated by at least 45 minutes. This means you can count a run-swim-run, run-bike-run, run-weights-run, as 2 sessions as long as the thing in between lasts for at least 45 minutes.
So here are the 100 Day Run Challenge Clubs:
1. Platinum Club = Avg. of 7 runs per week (100 runs in 100 days)
2. Gold Club = Avg. of 6 runs per week (84 runs in 100 days)
3. Silver Club = Avg. of 5 runs per week (70 runs in 100 days)
4. Bronze Club = Avg. of 4 runs per week (56 runs in 100 days)
5. Participation Club = Avg. of 3 runs per week (42 runs in 100 days)
This is great training for anyone doing a full or half marathon or an early season triathlon, and you'll be shocked by how quickly you accumulate mileage, all without getting injured...because the focus is keeping them short and aerobic. By all means feel free to run longer than 30 minutes, but the main goal here is to get you out the door, 4-7 times per week.
There will be a party at the conclusion of the challenge on Thursday June 2 at The Lockeroom (BTC Social Night) where each person who achieved their goal will be rewarded with a gift (thinking medals) commemorating their achievement.
We will set up an 'Excel Spreadsheet' where you are able to enter your daily runs (number of runs, distance and time). We will have to rely on the HONOR SYSTEM for this. Once again this is meant to be fun and not a competition.
For now, please accept this invitation to participate here on Facebook. Send an email to duster7777@hotmail.com to receive additional instructions regarding on how to access and complete the Excel Spreadsheet.
We hope to see you "run away" with this!!
Push On, Finish Strong!
Doug,
100 Day Run Challenge Coordinator
..........................
PS: Question about runs shorter than 30 minutes?
We want to encourage people to run whenever possible. If you run less than 30 minutes, no, you don't get credit for doing a "complete" run for your final "club" status. However, there are times when you can't get the entire thing in because you have to emphasize another sport or you only have time for a 15 minute transition run, or you have to get groceries or get to work. So we still want to encourage you to run and there can still be some form of credit for the minutes and distance on a cumulative basis.
So basically let's say you do a 15 minute run covering 3K. You cannot enter this as a "complete run" for your "club status", however, what you CAN do is add these 15 minutes in your entry for the next run...so if your next run is 45 minutes, and 9K, just put it in as 60 minutes and 12K and take some partial credit for it. (You cannot add two 15 minute runs to count for a single 30 minute run...you have to run 30 minutes continuously in one training session for it to count as a whole run)
See you on the Road!
